11. Which of the following options correctly explains the term "Heat budget"?

      A) It is the amount of heat which the surface of earth receives from the sun
      B) It is the radiation from the earth in the form of long waves
      C) It is a mode of transfer of heat through matter by molecular activity
      D) It is the balance between incoming and outgoing radiation

Answer : It is the balance between incoming and outgoing radiation

Heat budget is the balance between incoming heat absorbed by the earth and outgoing heat released from earth. Incoming heat energy sometimes varies from one location to another. If it is not balanced, the earth will get gradually cooler or warmer every year.

12. Burns caused by steam are much more severe than those caused by boiling water because?

      A) A Steam pierces through the pores of body quickly
      B) Temperature of steam is higher
      C) Steam is gas and engulfs the body quickly
      D) Steam has more latent heat

Answer : Steam has more latent heat

Steam has more energy than boiling water as its undergoing a phase change. Phase change requires more energy while it change from one state(liquid state) to another state(gaseous state). Latent heat is the energy required to change the phase of a substance. So when the steam hits our skin, more energy is released in a short period of time which makes the burn more severe compared to boiling water as it doesn't undergo any phase change.

13. The layer of atmosphere close to the earth's surface is called

      A) Exosphere
      B) Ionosphere
      C) Stratosphere
      D) Troposphere

Answer : Troposphere
Troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere. There is a constant change in the weather condition in this layer. The air we breathe exist here. As this layer consists of 99% of water vapour most of the cloud formation occurs here.

14. Reverse transcriptase was discovered by

      A) Beadle and Tatum
      B) Watson and Crick
      C) Temin and Baltimore
      D) Har Govind Khorana

Answer : Temin and Baltimore
Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme which accelerates the formation of DNA from an RNA template and the process is called Reverse Transcription. It was discovered by Temin and Baltimore indepedently and they both shared the nobel prize in Physiology or medicine for this.
